"You can see public addiction to “studies” that explain ourselves to ourselves everywhere. The “study” long ago replaced the sermon as the subject of the sermon."

Such a great line.

I'm always struck reading books from the 19th century where the author will just say "Here's how things are based on centuries of collected wisdom and my own personal experience and thinking really hard about it and here's how things might possibly should be based on that" without ever referencing a study. It's really refreshing.

Interesting piece, Hollis. The universities made their bed, and they are still making it: time to sleep in it. Excellent commentary on the “sociological gaze,” but what say you about the data chum being turned out in the Humanities? At least with the sciences, even the social sciences, there is some expectation of objective rigor. With much (certainly not all) of the humanities scholarship the credo seems to be Let’s see who can drum up the most outlandish nonsense, thrown it against the wall, and see if it sticks.
